What’s Wrong with “I want to get only what’s needed”?

Did you ever complain you were learning something that would never be useful? Of course you’re not alone. Life is short, time is limited. It would be wonderful if we could spend our time and energy only on what we truly need. Nevertheless, it’s simply impossible, since by definition, nothing useless could be called as knowledge.

Nevertheless, why most people are afraid of “wasting” their time and energy? Partly because they never believe in knowledge at all. Perhaps they “learned” something, but they never bothered to practice what they’ve learned at all. For example, our schools do teach students how logic works, but it turns out, as always, most people would rather take for granted so many things that for them logic is not as useful as it should be. In fact, no time spending on true learning is wasted. Another reason why we cannot only learn the useful part and leave the rest in dark is that every piece of knowledge is by nature integrated with one another, although the links might well be invisible and indiscernible. And sometimes the very reason that some pieces of knowledge seem useless is precisely because of the absence of other linked parts.
