美国大学本科申请DIY简明指南（二）

通用申请网站（CommonApp.org）设计得非常糟糕（用普通话讲就是非常肏蛋）——如果你按照上一篇的建议，已经去注册并浏览了一圈的话，你肯定有这样的判断。每年我这里都有客户折腾一晚上竟然没有注册上账户的人——在填写那个复杂的注册表单之时，一定要关闭中文输入法，因为生日输入框里不能输入全角字母、标点符号，所以，你无法输入这个符号：“/”（但没有任何出错提示）；于是，当你在生日输入框里输入8位数字之后，它会告诉你“The date of birth year cannot be before 1753.”……
在CommonApp的Writing部分，有两个必须提交的内容：
- Short Answer (1000 character maximum)
- Personal Essay (250-500 words)
Short Answer的题目是（直接粘贴文本）：
Please briefly elaborate on one of your extracurricular activities or work experiences in the space below (1000 character maximum).
Personal Essay的题目是（六选一；上传文档[txt或rtf、doc、docx等格式）：
- Evaluate a significant experience, achievement, risk you have taken, or ethical dilemma you have faced and its impact on you.
- Discuss some issue of personal, local, national, or international concern and its importance to you.
- Indicate a person who has had a significant influence on you, and describe that influence.
- Describe a character in fiction, a historical figure, or a creative work (as in art, music, science, etc.) that has had an influence on you, and explain that influence.
- A range of academic interests, personal perspectives, and life experiences adds much to the educational mix. Given your personal background, describe an experience that illustrates what you would bring to the diversity in a college community, or an encounter that demonstrated the importance of diversity to you.
- Topic of your choice.
Short Answer是整个申请文档中，唯一一处要求申请者专门elaborate（详细论述，但竟然最多只能写1000字符，大约200词左右的篇幅）课外活动的地方。
而在Personal Essay的六道题目中，注意以下几点：
- 马上开始写——这个写作过程不受限于你的标准化考试成绩。写得越早，最终写得越好。申请这事儿，在跟别人比之前，得先跟自己比。
- 注意字数要求（最多500词）
- 慎选最后一题。理由详见“美国大学申请文书最常见最危险的错误”。
- 至少写其中的两篇，第五题必写。事实上，有一些大学不使用CommonApp系统——但如果这些题目都写过的话，那么基本上相当于涵盖了那些独立网申的学校的题目。另外，多写几篇，才好最终有对比，才能选择最好的那个。最后，第五题，几乎是所有学校都可能涉及到的一个话题。
现在你都知道题目了，开始写吧！至于怎么写？如何才算好？先别管它，你就按照你目前能做到的理解程度写，写完了才知道怎么回事儿，后面的内容你才可能“有感受地”理解。
